Luo Huanghun returned to the Ren family with Ren Jingsi.

Before stepping through the door, she glanced up at the sky outside. Compared to the tiny patch of sky inside the Ren family’s walls, the world outside was so vast.

In that moment, a fierce longing surged in her heart. She wanted to leave the Ren family as soon as possible and gain her freedom.

Ren Jingsi ignored her, changed his clothes, and hurried out—no doubt to see Li Linger. Bored, Luo Huanghun made up an excuse and took Qingmei out to the street.

Qingmei disapproved of her boldness, but Luo Huanghun was determined, and there was nothing she could do.

Luo Huanghun had always followed the rules before, never stepping out of line. But what had that gotten her in the end? She might as well do as she pleased, and live for herself.

But as she wandered, she saw with her own eyes how attentive Ren Jingsi was to Li Linger.

In a restaurant, sitting by the window, she watched her husband half-embrace a petite, lovely woman, his face showing a gentle smile she had never seen before.

Qingmei, indignant, whispered, “The young master is too much! You just got married, and he’s already flaunting his relationship with another woman!”

Relationship? Li Linger would soon be officially married into the Ren family.

Luo Huanghun smiled and patted Qingmei’s hand, unconcerned. “To your young master, I’m the other woman.”

Qingmei stomped her foot in anger, but at that moment, Luo Huanghun overheard a conversation from a nearby table.

“…Why is Prince Guangling’s triumphant return so quiet this time? Not a single celebration, not even a reward from the emperor?”

“His achievements are too great—there’s nothing left to reward him with. What, should the emperor give up his own throne…?”

“Brother Li, watch your words!”

“Did you hear? Prince Guangling was ambushed on his way back—supposedly by remnants of the Qing Kingdom…”

“Remnants? Who’d believe that? Fine, fine, I’ll stop talking!”

After a while, Brother Li sighed, “Prince Guangling’s situation is really precarious…”

The idle chatter continued, but Luo Huanghun’s mind was reeling.

Something wasn’t right!

She remembered clearly—in her previous life, Prince Guangling, Murong Feng, had also won a great victory, but he never made it home. He was killed in a vicious ambush by the enemy’s remnants!

Luo Huanghun suddenly felt a weight lift from her heart. If Murong Feng’s fate could change, then so could hers—and the Luo family’s!

Feeling lighter, she continued listening to the conversation, which turned to Murong Feng’s past exploits, making her curious about him.

The emperor would never fail to reward such merit; otherwise, public opinion would be impossible to contain.

Sure enough, soon after, Emperor Yin issued a decree: to celebrate Prince Guangling’s victory, there would be a grand hunt at Yanling three months later, with all royal relatives and court officials required to attend.

Both the Ren and Luo families were on the list.
